Mix and Match Team Ladder League

2008-2009

Sponsor: Dutch Inn/Don Lowther Snow Removal
Welcome to another season of the Wednesday Night Dutch Inn/Don Lowther Snow Removal Ladder League! In this league. the bottom three teams of the A pool change places with the top three teams of the B pool at the end of each round. The ladder format means that teams play other teams of approximately the same calibre, and adds some variety, as well. There are 20 teams signed up -- two pools of ten teams. The top two teams in the A pool of each draw will win a prize at season end, along with the top team in the B pool in the final round.

In order to accommodate 20 teams this year, and eliminate byes, we will play both six and eight end games, allowing all teams to play every night (if we played only eight end games, there would be four byes per team). There will be two sheets of six end games, with start times of 6, 7:30 and 9 pm, and two sheets of eight end games at 6:30 and 8:30 pm each night. A and B pools will each get the same number of games of each length.

The first night, October 22nd, will be Qualifier Night, with each team playing another rink chosen at random, with the winning teams advancing to the A pool. There are 21 weeks of league play after that, with no curling on Christmas eve and New Year's eve, and the last night being April 1st.

To make things more interesting, we will have four rounds (partial round robins) this year of five weeks each, so there will be lots of movement.  The final night will be used as a makeup night for storms, or a fun night.

RULES:

This is an open, semi-competitive league. Team entry (any combination of male and/or female), partial team and single entry (we will assign you to a team) are permitted.  To keep this league on a more recreational level, no more than two players on one team may be members of the same Tuesday night competitive league team.

No ties: Skips will draw to the button (with sweeping) to resolve individual game ties. Only the throwing team may sweep the rock -- the opposing team may not sweep behind the tee (rule clarification to address a question I received last season).

Points will be awarded as follows:

3 points will be awarded for a win, 1 point for a loss, 0 points for a loss by default . Scores will be kept as well, to be used only in end-of-round tie resolution. In the event of a default, the non-defaulting team will receive a score of one point for each scheduled end.

At least one regular team member and at least three players in total must be present to avoid a default. Team members can play any position and can change from game to game. When teams are tied in points after a round, the win/loss record of those teams against each other shall be used to determine their ranking (provided that the two teams faced each other in the round). When the ranking of teams cannot be determined by comparing round win/loss records against the teams involved in the tie, the ranking shall be determined by the score differentials of the teams who are tied. If they are still tied, the full score differentials of the teams who are tied will be used.

In the event of a cancellation, the cancelled draw will be played at the end of round, and all subsequent draws will remain where they were (note: this is a change from previous years).

Scutt team wins Ladder League A Pool in Round IV; Berry rink takes B pool

The Wednesday Night Ladder League, sponsored by Murphy's Cornwall Pharmacy (1st half of season) and the Howard Johnson Dutch Inn and Don Lowther Snow Removal (2nd half) wrapped up on April 1st. It was a great season, with no nights cancelled due to weather (although there were some close calls), giving us qualifier night plus three five week rounds and a six week draw at the end.

The A and B pool winners in the final round both went undefeated, with the rink of Geoff Scutt, Sherren MacKinnon, Donald Weeks, and Deb DelValle winning the A pool, and the team of Shirley Berry, Arleen Harris, Paul Arsenault and Derek Gallant taking the B (there is a prize for the B pool winner in the last round). Second place in the A pool went to the Jim Farquharson team, which had only one loss, and included Roy Coffin, Bob MacWilliams, and John Berry. The Farquharson foursome never came out in front all season, but managed to get into the prizes with second place finishes in three of the four rounds! Second place in the B pool in the final round (no prize for them) went to Ray Biagé, Rebecca Rolfe, Derek MacEwen, and Neil Smith, who lost only to the Berry team.

Here is the list of prize winners for the season:

Round One
1st place: Jeff Taylor, Alex Sutherland, Sean Young, and Alex Jenkins
2nd place: Jim Farquharson, Roy Coffin, Bob MacWilliams, and John Berry.

Round Two
1st place: Terry MacCormac, Ricky Milton, Nancy Milton, and Cindy MacCormac
2nd place: Bob Fowler, Tracy MacDonald, Gary Crosby and Linda Turnbull.

Round Three
1st place: Bob Fowler, Paul Durant, Gary Crosby and Linda Turnbull
2nd place: Jim Farquharson, Roy Coffin, Bob MacWilliams, John Berry

Round Four
1st place: Geoff Scutt, Sherren MacKinnon, Donald Weeks, Deb DelValle
2nd place: Jim Farquharson, Roy Coffin, Bob MacWilliams, John Berry.
B Pool first place: Shirley Berry, Arleen Harris, Paul Arsenault and Derek Gallant

Thanks to all twenty teams who participated this year. Our unique draw with six games of six ends and four of four ends each week worked out surprisingly well, giving everyone in the draw the opportunity to play every night.  See you in the fall!

Fowler Foursome Finishes First in round three A Pool

Round three wrapped up Wednesday night Feb. 18 in the Dutch Inn/Don Lowther Snow Removal ladder league.
Two teams, skipped by Bob Fowler and Jim Farquharson, finished atop the A pool with five wins. Since they didn't play each other in the round, we have to go to total points to determine the winner, and discover that Fowler finishes in first place by a ten point margin.
There was a log jam for third place, with four teams having two losses each. We won't bother to do the math on who beat whom, as there is no prize money on the line. The tied teams were skipped by Terry MacCormac, Gord Peters, Rupert Sweetapple, and Chris Hodgson.
One team, skipped by Kelly Watts, had no wins, and moves down the ladder to the B pool. That leaves three teams with only one win, only one of which survives in the A pool Since none of the teams beat the other two, we have to look at the points. The Geoff Scutt foursome beat out the Ray Biagé rink by a single point, and remains in the A pool for the final round, while Biagé and Ernie Diamond move down to the B pool.
Down in the B pool, two teams, skipped by Guy Arsenault and Joerg Soltermann, had only one loss, and move up the ladder to the A pool. For the record, Soltermann finished first, with more points than Arsenault (the teams didn't meet in the round).
Four teams had two losses, but the Kathy Reeves rink lost one by default, leaving three teams with 11 points. The Jeff Taylor rink beat both of the other two teams, skipped by Karen Currie and Shirley Berry, and joins Guy and Joerg in the upper division. Barb Duncan-Biagé had three losses, followed by Paul Neima, also with three losses, one by default. The Robert Waite rink picked up a win in the round, while the Colleen Soltermann team did not.
There are six weeks left in the season, so we'll finish up with a six week round. As well as prizes for the winner and runner-up in the A pool in the last round, there is also a prize for the winner of the B pool.
Here are the pools for Round Four, which runs Feb. 25, March 4, March 11, March 18, March 25 and April 1

(Round Two)

Round two is over in the Murphy's Cornwall Pharmacy Wednesday Night Ladder League
Three teams had four wins in the A pool, but the rink of Terry MacCormac, Ricky Milton, Nancy Milton, and Cindy MacCormac grabbed first place honours when scores are added up, followed closely by the second place team of Bob Fowler, Tracy MacDonald, Gary Crosby and Linda Turnbull. Ernie Diamond, Marilyn Diamond, Shirley Lank, and Gordie Lank were close behind in third place.

Two teams, skipped by Gord Peters and Jim Farquharson, were next with three wins, while the Geoff Scutt foursome has a pair of victories.
There were four teams with 1 win, only one of whom gets to survive in the A pool. The skips were Karen Currie, Guy Arsenault, Ray Biagé, and Jeff Taylor. Their lone victories were all to one of the other 1 win teams, with both Currie and Arsenault beating Biagé, Biagé beating Taylor, and Taylor beating Currie. However, since no team was beat by the other three tied teams, it then becomes necessary to go to the score totals. Biagé ended up with the most points, 38, followed by Arsenault at 25, Taylor has 15 points plus between 0 and 10 for the unmarked last week score (opponent had 11), and Currie has 18. This means that the Ray Biagé rink retains their berth in the A pool, while the Guy Arsenault, Karen Currie and Jeff Taylor teams move down the ladder to the B pool.
Two teams, skipped by Rupert Sweetapple and Chris Hodgson, had perfect 5-0 records in the B pool. The two teams did not play each other in the round, so Sweetapple, who had a higher total score, finishes first.
Two teams, skipped by Kelly Watts, and Kathy Reeves, had two wins. Watts beat Reeves in their encounter (must have been on a draw to the button, as they have the same score recorded) and joins Sweetapple and Hodgson on the trip up the ladder to the A pool.
The Shirley Berry rink is next with 3 wins, followed by Paul Neima and Joerg Soltermann with a pair of victories. Barb Duncan-Biagé picked up a single win. while two teams, skipped by Colleen Soltermann and Robert Waite, did not pick up a win.

(Round One)

Jeff Taylor rink wins A Pool Round One

Round One is over in the Murphy's Cornwall Pharmacy Mix and Match Ladder League. The youngest team in the league, skipped by Jeff Taylor, with Alex Sutherland, Sean Young, and Alex Jenkins came out the winners in the A Pool, finishing the five week round with only one loss. The somewhat older Jim Farquharson foursome, with  Roy Coffin, Bob MacWilliams, and John Berry, also had only one loss, to Taylor, relegating them to the runner-up position. Four teams, skipped by Karen Currie, Bob Fowler, Ernie Diamond, and Guy Arsenault, all had two losses. Ray Biagé's team, who came up on the short end of an exciting battle with the Taylor rink the final week, were next with three losses.

Three teams, skipped by Barb Duncan-Biagé, Rupert Sweetapple, and Paul Neima, had only one win, and will be making their way down the ladder to the B pool for Round Two, which goes Dec. 3, 10, and 17, takes a two week break for Christmas and New Year's eves, resumes on Jan. 7, and wraps up on Jan. 14.

In the B pool, the Geoff Scutt squad, with President Sherren MacKinnon, Donald Weeks, and Deb DelValle, went undefeated to win the pool and a trip up the ladder to the A pool. They'll be joined in the A Pool by the Terry MacCormac and Gord Peters rinks, who finished the round with one loss each. For the record, MacCormac and Peters did not meet in the round, but Peters gets the nod for second place, as he had a higher total score in the round. Shirley Berry and Chris Hodgson each had a couple of losses, while the Joerg Soltermann and Robert Waite teams had three. Kelly Watts and Kathy Reeves each picked up a win, while Colleen Soltermann wasn't as fortunate!

So it's Neima, Duncan-Biagé and Sweetapple down, and Scutt, Peters and MacCormac up the ladder for round two.
